Overview
Named after the original SDP of the Third Republic (1989–1993), the modern SDP is a mid-tier party that has produced senators and competes in governorship races. Muritala Ajaka came a credible third in the 2023 Kogi governorship.
History
The current SDP was registered in 2012. It draws symbolic continuity from the historic SDP of the 1990s — the party under which MKO Abiola won the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. The modern SDP competes in various elections but has not broken into the top tier nationally.
