Overview

One of Nigeria's oldest surviving parties, associated with the "talakawa" (commoner) politics of the old Kano school. Founded by Aminu Kano, PRP is a historical marker of progressive northern politics.

History

Founded in 1978 by Aminu Kano, PRP was a radical left-wing party in the Second Republic (1979–1983), governing Kano and Kaduna states. After years of dormancy, PRP was revived but has not replicated its historic influence. It remains active as a historical symbol of popular northern politics.
