Overview

NNPP's 2023 breakthrough was built around the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano, but the party is now a much narrower Kano-centred force after Rabiu Kwankwaso's move into the NDC bloc in 2026. Kano remains its critical remaining base through Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

History

Originally founded as a minor party, NNPP was revived and transformed into a political vehicle by Kwankwaso after he fell out with both PDP and APC. His 2023 candidacy and the Kwankwasiyya network gave the party national visibility, culminating in Kano's governorship win. That coalition became far less stable after Kwankwaso joined the NDC realignment in May 2026, leaving NNPP with a stronger state footprint than national coalition profile.

Key races

Kano (Abba Yusuf defending governorship)

NNPP's 2027 strength now hinges almost entirely on Kano. If Abba Yusuf holds the governorship, the party remains regionally relevant; if not, Kwankwaso's exit to NDC could shrink NNPP back into a minor residual platform.
