Overview
A newly registered opposition platform that became the main home of the 2026 anti-APC realignment. NDC now hosts Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other defectors seeking to turn separate opposition camps into a single presidential vehicle for 2027.
History
NDC emerged in its current form during the 2026 opposition reshuffle and quickly absorbed politicians leaving ADC, LP, NNPP, and parts of the PDP orbit. By May 2026, the party had received Obi and Kwankwaso, attracted defecting federal lawmakers, ratified its national executive committee, and used its national convention to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the south and the 2031 ticket to the north.
2023 Election Performance
NDC was not on the ballot in the 2023 general election. Its current coalition profile emerged through 2026 defections, convention decisions, and opposition regrouping.

Key races
Presidential primary, coalition cohesion, southern zoning implementation
NDC is trying to become the main opposition coalition vehicle for 2027. Southern zoning currently favours Obi, while Kwankwaso remains a major northern power broker inside the party. The central test is whether NDC can hold together its fast-growing coalition long enough to avoid another opposition split before the primaries.
